Books are a very valuable resource for every child no matter what their age. You can start with cloth, board or plastic books for babies. These are very good because they are longer lasting than paper books and have lots of colourful pictures to keep their attention.

The earlier you introduce books to your baby the better. Let them look at the pictures while you read to them. As they get older introduce different ones until you find the ones they are more interested in. Maybe they have an interest in a particular cartoon character or television show like Thomas the Tank Engine. You can build up a collection of books within a series.

When they are old enough you could expand their interest by taking them to the local library where there is a huge choice, make this a regular outing. This is also a lovely way to make friends with other toddlers and their parents. Some libraries offer a reading session aimed at younger children where you can take your little one each week to listen to stories being told in a group. This is a good way to get them used to being around books all the time. Bedtime stories are a must. Reading to your child at bedtime gets them into a routine that will help settle them and unwind them after an energetic day playing and help sooth them off to sleep.

Another kind of book which is more interesting for them as they grow is the interactive book where they have things like zips, beepers, buttons and other challenges for them to master. You could also try Personalized ones which help to keep their attention as they are personally part of the story so it makes it more interesting for them.

When my son was growing up we always had a cloth interactive book which was attached to his pushchair to keep him occupied – he loved it. We also had some which were kept in the car and we kept books in most rooms of the house where he might crawl or toddle. As he grew up he always had a healthy interest in reading them. We also found that he had a better grasp of English when he started school.

Being exposed to them daily can only be a good thing. Read to your child regularly to keep their interest. There are so many new things happening around them that they want to explore but if they have a healthy interest in reading from an early age they will always be happy to pick up a book to have a rest from playing and to enable them to wind down. By exposing children to books at an early age you are keeping alive their interest in reading and giving them a good starting ground for their future.
